Help identifying a socket/wrench?

Hi there folks, this site's helped me in a few odd spots with some older tools, but this particular one has me stumped as to what it even is called.
I'll give links to the photo gallery instead of the actual photos since they're a bit large for detail's sake.

My dad says it looks like a wrench socket, since it's rather large like a specialized wrench, but has a 1/2" drive hole on the one end.
If anyone might be able to point me in the right direction as to at least what the things called, I'd really appreciate it.
