Repainted snap on toolboxes

Post by Oldtuleguy »

I have some pretty old snap on boxes that someone has painted. I would like to restore them, but am not sure if that would hurt their value. One is a 1930 3/4 drive socket box that should be black but has been painted red. The other is a b 100 super set case from 1938. It is now green, even the midget box inside. It's a pretty good paint job, but I would rather have it the original black. Would appreciate some input on this, as I have not really dealt with anything this rare before. Thanks

I would try to use Lacquer thinner to remove the newer paint, maybe the original paint is under there. If not, remove what is there and repaint.
The 38 super set, should be a drab green.
The 38 set is very rare, could you post a pic. does it have the ferret set, does it have all the tools?

PS: wear gloves, LT works only while it is wet.
Most collectors like the original paint, but sometimes you just have to refurbish to save history.

You were lucky to find such a complete set. to repaint is up to you.
The places of the breaker bar and two extensions should be exchanged.
It is odd that the 3/4 rat has a thin selector switch, this date usually has a flat one.
This is the only master set I have seen with this layout. A only known example. Thanks for posting it.

Ratchet head is a 36, everything else is 38. I think there is some black paint under the green.
