Carry box and handle question

Hi. This is my first post ! I will ask my questions as I type this.

I have two "carry type" Snap On tool boxes. The modern and current model is a KRA 21G. Both of mine are old and are not the same, and I will describe them as I go along. They are basically the same style "Gamble-Roof" tool box that opens up, the front falls flat, and two drawers can pull out. The might have come with a carry tray or not.

Box 1 It has Snap-On embossed with raised letters stamped in the part that lays flat....below the loop for the pad lock. It has NO carry handles on either end. It has a METAL carry handle on the top. In addition and unlike any others I've seen online, it has some kind holder for something screwed to the underneath side of the lid. The drawer pulls are the loop style. I can't find any part number stamped on it. What box is this and how old is it ?

I have a Snap On tool catalog "U" and an August 1954 price list. It calls a tool box like mine a KRD - 21 "GAMBLE-ROOF MECHANIKIT" and it came with a KTRD-1 Tote-Tray. The problem is, mine does not have a leather carry handle like the catalog says ! I spoke with a friend of mine Snap On Scottie today. He is on his way to being a 50 year Snap On dealer ! I asked him if Snap On had a replacement handle for those leather handles back in the day. He didn't know ! He said nobody ever asked him that in 50 years so he couldn't help me ! I was wondering if maybe Box 1 got a replacement handle in the past ? These boxes are heavy and that old leather handle must have gotten a workout since the box doesn't have end handles !
One thing Snap On Scottie said was a tool box like this was used by some shops to store the grinding wheels, tappets, maybe butt grinder stuff and other attachments for a VR-202 L M valve grinding machine. The "accessory" box would be next to the valve grinder on the same work bench or whatever. So if that's the case it wouldn't need the end handles ? Maybe that mysterious storage thing held a part for the valve grinding machine ? I believe this might be older than the one in the 1953 catalog. Picture below BOX 1.

BOX 2 This has KRA-21A on the back of it. It has Snap-on Tools stamped on the part that lays flat just like the other box, in the same place. It had a metal carry handle on the top or the "gamble roof" and a heavy duty carry handle on each end of the tool box. the drawer pulls are not the loop kind. How old is Box 2 ?

I'm wondering if Box 1 was once a military box or is it possibly the model from 1948-1950 ? Did Snap-On have a metal replacement handle for the leather handles ?

I am not certain, but in the mid 50s they started changing over the drawer pulls an lid handles. My guess would be this is from that transitional period. As to the odd holder on the lid, these boxes were used with different kits. It may have been industrial or an aircraft kit and the holder was specific to that. Such a kit may not show up in any catalog.

The other box is newer judging by the logo and the drawer style.

thanks Oldtuleguy ! In case you want to know, the 1954 price for this style box was $21.75 and it came with a tote tray. If somebody wanted this tote tray for a different box, it cost $3.85 :)
