Need help

Post by gjniles »

I am a retired Engr. that worked a 3M for almost 40 years. I have just rebuilt my house after a very large fire. We lost everything. I am trying to get an idea of the price of a set of Snap-on tool that were my father's. This set was bought in 1950. I have found the set in the 1950 T Catalog on page 14. The set was 5228-GS-B. This set was a total loss and went to the dump with everything else. I would also like to know what it would cost to replace it. I do not know if that is even possible. The real value of the set was it was my fathers and he passed in 1970 so the replacement is only to say I have the same set.

Can anyone tell me where I can find this info.

Thanks for the help

Very Sorry to hear about this.

I wish there was a way to get those few things that you really valued back. I often felt that we all have a lot of things that are too good to throw out, but not really what we wanted. I guess, on the positive side, you now get a "do over" and can buy what you really want. I also guess that you are in a real mess - sorry about that.

Price depends on a lot of things (Condition, the place and timing of a sale, who is buying), but I would start here

63 sockets 63@$4=252
11 handles 11@$20=220
7 extensions 7@$10=70
2 hack saws 2@$25=50
14 pliers 14@$20=280
5 specialty tools 5@$40=200
Scraper 1@$20=20
Allen head set 1@$70=70
Chisel set 1@$150=150
2 feeler gauges 2@$10=20
6 wrench sets 6@$150=900
2 half moon wrenches2@$30=60
Screw driver set 1@$120=120
4 hammers 4@$20=80
tinner’s snips 1@$20=20
soldering iron 1@$20=20

Try $2532

If you had these in a tool box - add in the tool box. I doubt if you father had just these - there was likely more added over the years, If he never used them and they were very good, add 20%. So there is no absolute answer, and this is only an opinion. I think you should start at $2532 and work up from there - I don't think it was worth less.

Frank, do you have any idea what this tool box and tools would have cost back in 1950. The tool box was a KR-56 with a KR-420 two draw. the tool set was the 5228-GS.

I need to give the insurance company on idea of what my Dad paid for this complete set back in 1950. Then they will add an inflation figure for a replacement cost. I just need to come up with a price he paid back in 1950.

Thanks

I think you wanted to thank Snapmom, The original prices came from them –

I would push back on the question. What somebody paid in 1950 is not important. They could say it was valueless because it deprecated? - A 1953 Corvette sold for $3513 but is worth about $2.5 million today.

According to the inflation calculator I used (http://146.142.4.24/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl) $520.44 in 1950 dollars is equivalent to $4,632.93 in 2009 dollars.

$ 36.95
$ 19.35
$ 464.14
$ 520.44

i was a dealer for many years and i can tell you that unless it has changed you should only need to have a list of the tools that are gone and your insurance company will deal directly with Snap-on and get them to you. Snap-on has a deal with many insurance companies where they basically sell replacement tools to them at a discount and they are delivered directly to the insured. The local Snap-on dealer also does get credit for the sale and does not have to actually handle the tools or any paperwork. Also if your insurance company does not do this then since the tools have a full lifetime warranty they should be replaced to you at today's cost without any consideration as to what they cost when purchased because if broken they would be replaced with a new one and the warranty cost would be today's price. I hope this makes it clear to you.
