My Old Tool Box

Ok,here is where I am in trying to figure out a value on this set of tools:

Looking on Ebay I see the prices vary drastically so using the 1/2" ratchet as a guide I found they are priced any where between $30 and $90 so that tells me that an average price for that size ratchet could be around $50.

A guy sent me a link to an online SnapOn catalogue and looking up that same ratchet I see its price is around $150.

So my conclusion is that to start I need to price all those tools using the catalogue and then place the value of my set at 30% of that list price.

Anyone think this is the best approach or do I just start listing them individually and see how they sell or not progresses. Sure would be a pain to piece them outa here.

I'll do the same with the "other tools" too but use a factor more like 10% - 15% of their listed value.

chrome vanadium is sometimes priced like gold. it sells by the kilo, ounce and gram at wholesale. but after it's fashioned into a shiny object that goes in a box, there's not a good measure or guide for determining value. The only difference is, I keep my box of shiny things in the garage, and she keeps hers in her sock drawer. I'd rather purchase by the pound, but your 30% of catalog price is as good as any other method.

Well, with all the good help from this forum I finally came up with a price on my "old tool box full of tools". Thanks very much to whoever sent the link to the online SnapOn catalogue too.

Stopped and picked up some drawer liner this morning after spending most all day yesterday cleaning and polishing the box too. This next week I'll put everything back in some sort of order and then take what's left over to good will. Probably won't be much since I'm hoping to put together a complete set of tools to either sell or give to one of my grandsons when they get a little older and show an interest in cars, motorcycles, etc.

I started out with my grandfather's tools and finding them so good after all the work they saw is what gave me the idea so long ago of putting my own set together with quality components.

Here's a couple photos showing the box full of tools. There are sockets spanning sizes from 3/16" thru 1 1/2" and long combination wrenches plus other versions spanning 1/4" thru 1 1/4" stuffed in there along with many other necessary tools to make a complete mechanic's set. Or at least that is what kept me in business for half dozen years some time ago along with a successful hobby racing career. The boxful weighs about 160 pounds.
Found two books costing 50 cents each covering drag strip rules dated 1960 & 1961 in a drawer.
Cleaning out the store room turned up one trophy for winning a 1/4 mile drag class at 132 mph back in 1961 too.
