Any info on a 1962 XPL 996-4 box?

Post by davewho1 »

Hi, I joined back in March, but this is my first post/thread. Nice site here. :)

I picked up an XPL 996-4 box date coded 1962 at an estate sale yesterday. It is about 12" wide X 6 3/8" tall X 7 1/4" deep. It is apparently an unusual color for that era of Snap On tool boxes - kind of a Sea Foam green. I am fairly certain it is the original color. I found a similar, but later model box, a KRA-149A, on this site, which is for electronic tools.

I'm just wondering if I found something unusual. I've never seen a tool box number starting with an X. I have had SO tools since the mid-1980s, but I have just recently become interesting in collecting them, so I know very little about part numbers, etc.

It is a very cool little box, I like it.

Thanks a lot for any help! :)

Thanks! :) Is that an unusual part number for a box?

Yes, a very odd number, I do not see that number in any of my cats.

I think it is for a kit. I would guess it was a special order and the color plus the content was put together for some piece of equipment

It is not a standard piece

Thanks for the info. :) The original owner worked for Lockheed, so it probably was a special order.

I went back for part 2 of this living estate sale today and got to talk to the gentleman who owned the box. He remembers it, but didn't recall if was a special order or not. So I guess the mystery remains. Oh, well.

Thanks again! :)
