Snap on tools with G.M.C. Standards

Snap on tools with G.M.C. Standards

I do not know to much about this subject, and am hoping to learn more.
In the 40s-50s (maybe more) the industrial cats have reference to G.M.C. Standards. The cats show GMC numbers, and you can find a few tools with these model numbers on them.
So what was the story behind all this.
Shown below. A page from a 48 industrial cat. A industrial socket from that era, (no date code) with three model numbers, including the GMC No.
