MT 1460 tach dwell use

Post by anglofish »

red jaw battery positive
black jaw battery negative
small jaw (mine yellow) coil negative
inductive clamp to #1 sparkplug wire (just for oughts, might not matter...)
start engine

Snap-on appears display
hit "reset"

display Cyl my case "6" enter
display Cyc my case 4 (4 cycle, 2 cycle?) enter
display Firing order my case 153624 enter
display rpm display dwell
my case rpm reads 850. dwell reads 36

regapping points will change dwell, which also changes timing,
(another chapter) there is "even" "odd" pads also to push,
these cause a minus xxx rpm to show, and affects engine static running...
not sure how necessary this feature...
move induct clamp from #1 sparkplug lead to coil output lead...
if rpm was 800, 6 cyl will now read 4800 rpm.. just curiosity...
this just written after purchase mt1460 no document, not sure even good...
and internet seems suspicious sites to find a manual..
Therefore experimented myself and above you have
basic formula for connection and read out... did not blow up the mt1460...
have now you will say overkill three meters capable dwell measurement,
all read within 1 degree each other
the engine runs nice.

this written for anyone digging about for how to hook up mt1460 Snap-on
I don't claim to be definitive authority, but this works for me... In Snap-on
manual, if available, surely more details... but online search this manual
sends me to dark places... for my purposes not necessary given results
as stated above.
cheers
