Box combo values

Post by Priv8teer »

I have several combos of chest and cabinet that I am looking at.

1.) KR537/KR557, 1980s, fair condition with lots of stickers, no locks, bottom drawer BB slide is busted on one side. Listed at $500 with delivery
2.) KR537/KR557 and middle chest, with two lockers as well, 1980s, good condition everything works including the keys. Listed at $800

I think I can get the second option for $700 maybe even delivered, which seems like a good deal. This is around Orlando FL, and the listing seems to have been sitting for months, so no real demand.

Any thoughts?

This is my take on listings like that. If I can not drive locally and see them then I am not interested. If something is listed for any amount of time that is kind of a too good to be true price then that's probably what it is, it is a scam, there is not box, they found a picture on the internet and posted it for sale hoping somebody will send them money. Never send money or any kind of payment for anything you can not see in person with your own eyes. Even if you do drive across the state or country to see something, a box is something I would never have shipped, you know it is going to get damaged in shipping, so if you are going to drive that far to look at it then just rent a truck, buy it, and take it home.

Another thing to consider is that even newer boxes like less than a couple years old may still have money owed on them but they are still trying to sell them. If you need to have something warranted on it like drawer slides or anything and your local dealer looks at the serial number to get the right slides, they can find it still has money owed on it and they can take it and repossess it even tho you paid for it. I would get the serial number off of any box I wanted to buy and call and make sure nobody owes anything on it.

But at the end of the day when it comes to price, it is worth what you are willing to pay for it, there is no number set in stone, if you like it and think it is a good deal then that is all that matters, buy it and be happy and enjoy it.

Thank you for the info, I will definitely check on any money owed if the box is a newer one. Since I posted, I have actually be considering going newer, as I started thinking maybe the KR537-557 combo would be too small for me.

If there is nothing owed on a box then there are alot of good deals out there, you can find $10,000 boxes used only a year or so for $2,000 all the time and that is a deal all day long. Myself I would never buy new, I have no problems buying used boxes as long as I can go there and see it myself when buying. Then even at $2,000 in a year or so when you want to upgrade you will still get your money back out of it.

Oh that is definitely what I am seeing here in FL. There are tons of options in the 2k range for good looking modern boxes.

However, I did end up buying a KR537/KR557 yesterday. It was not one of the ones in my original post, but rather one that had been posted for a while with a picture that made it look like it was broken. I saw it in person since it was listed at a very low price, and it ended up being much nicer than the pic made it out to be.

I bet in a year or so I will be aching to trade it in for a larger box, though...

One other thing to just throw out there, I have nothing against women at all and nothing against women that own tool boxes. BUT BEWARE when going to buy a box, ask alot of questions that the actual box owner would know the answer to even if it was a woman. I see it all the time where women get mad at their husbands or boyfriends and want to get even and sell their things and that is not good. It can still go back that money is owed on boxes or tools and even go as far as the guy reporting things stolen. Just be aware.
