1/2 No. Early Brace Progression

1/2" Drive No 5 Brace

Shown above No. 5 brace.

In the lower left photos the swing handle is shown. The top photo shows a pinched stop. The lower panel shows the bend in the brace stops the grip from moving.

The lower right photos show the squares. Both have 3 ball detents, 2 high and one low. It also shows the earlier square is smaller and the upper square is machined around the ball detent.

Early Brace The No 5 is a Brace rather than a Speeder.

The difference between and Brace and a Speeder is the width.

The Brace has a deeper swing and has more leverage.

Shown above in the first picture is a No. 5 brace.

There are several variations in early and late braces.

In the lower photos the swing handle is shown. The top photo shows a pinched stop.

It in not clear to me if there are any with ball detent stops.

If so, these would likely be earlier.

The lower panel shows the bend in the brace stops the grip from moving.

This is later 1920s. The lower right photos show the squares.

Both have 3 ball detents, 2 high and one low.

It also shows the earlier square is smaller and the upper square is machined around the ball detent.

It is the initial No. 1.  The logo is small and obviously early, The next wrench up is shown in the in the 1923 catalog, but not in Catalog B 1925. The third wrench up is shown in Catalog B 1925 through 1929. It is show in Catalog F but not in Catalog G. The 1925 and 1929 logo are the same. The wrench at the top is the newest 1929 – 1948.

The logos are in the same order – newest on the top, the small logo is the oldest. The Oldest is not marked No.1.

10DA date stamped 1936

There are a series of these and the variations between them are not altogether clear, but this is a 10DA date stamped 1936. The handle has a square female opening for a ratchet of extension. There is a hole in the handle for a rod. The rods are not marked Snap on or carry any other ID that I can see. The join and the square are shown.  It is unclear why the joint has a series of recessed lines. The square is 45 degrees off
