Henry F. Phillips patented his screw head design in 1936. The key advantage of this design was the ability to self center. This allowed assembly operations to hold the center during fast rotations. It allowed for faster production lines

Pozidriv arrived in 1955/6 and was a joint development between the American Screw Company and the Phillips Screw Company. It has a couple of other names: BNAE NFL22-070, and SupaDriv. The basic idea was to replace the Phillips head.  The Phillips head does not “lock” into the screw head and torques until is slips out. This was an advantage is the 1930s and by 1940 all car manufacturers used these.  Over torque a Philips head causes the head to strip out.  The Pozidriv “locks” preventing this problem.

The heads look like Philips but are marked with a cross at 45 degrees to the slots. The Pozidriv has four additional points of contact and a flat bottom.

Clutch head screw drivers were from United Screw and Bolt Chicago, Il. The opening looks like a bat, with wings, and a circular core – There are 4 points of contact.  The design allows for a “lock” on the walls of the bolt or screw head without any downward pressure. When the tip wears, it can be reground off and work well. Corvettes, Chevy pickup beds, Mobile Homes, window manufacturers and some unknown reason – electric motors. There are 2 common sizes: 5⁄32, 3⁄16but 1⁄8, 1⁄4, 5⁄16 exists as well,. They were common from the 1940s to the 1960s. The mobile home makers used these through the 1970s. The company that made these went out of business in 1997
